A Bit of Friday Harbor History

Spring and First Street

On May 9th 2002, a devastating fire consumed nearly the entire block of downtown Friday Harbor.

Volunteer fire fighters from Friday Harbor, San Juan Island, Orcas Island and Lopez Island fire districts responded to the call for help. The firefighters prevented the fire from spreading to neighboring Friday Harbor buildings in the downtown core of the “historic district”.

It took two years to reconstruct this landmark building. In 2004 two new buildings were constructed. These two Friday Harbor buildings now house:
• Eleven businesses
• A covered parking garage
• Outdoor seating
• Five exclusive, extended stay, luxury vacation rental suites called The San Juan Island Suites.

San Juan Island Awards

The Petersens, owners of the buildings, were committed to maintaining the architectural style that characterizes The Friday Harbor Historic District. They worked closely with the town’s Historic Preservation Review Board to design buildings that would complement the historic district and accommodate a variety of locally owned and operated small businesses.

In 2005 the Petersen’s received the town’s Partners in Preservation Award for “Outstanding Achievement in Historically Compatible New Construction” for the Friday Harbor Center project.

And in addition, the Petersens received the Building of the Year award from the construction industry for “New commercial mixed-use buildings in our
five-state region
”.

Welcome, to the award winning San Juan Suites – in the heart of Friday Harbor.
